What do I send with this "rent tax review"?

Question by Dark A: What do I send with this "rent tax review"? I recently received two tax reviews for rent paid, and it's requesting I send a ton of things I cannot send. It requests I send all rent receipts collected over the past two years, and that I have every one of my landlords that I've had over the past two years write up a letter and sign it saying I paid so much at least. I live 900 miles away from my last landlord, and the one before that doesn't know how to ; use a computer. How in God's name am I supposed to provide anything? I have 4 rent reciepts, but that's it. The other landlords didn't give them to me every month. Anyway, I'm in Ontario, Canada, and I'm wondering what I can send them. I'm not hiding anything, but I also don't have records for all the rent I've paid in the past two years, and I certaintly can't travel 900 miles to get a signature and a letter. Any ideas? I paid in cash and didn't get a reciept. I had JUST moved out on my own and didn't really know anything about taxes and such. Best answer:

How did you pay? If you paid by check, you *might* be able to use the check images from your bank statement. At any rate, type up a letter on YOUR computer, in the voice of your landlord and mail it to him, asking him to sign and send it back in the enclosed envelope. his-address his-city-state date To whom it may concern, John Smith rented an apartment from me. He lived there form January 2008 to August 2008. The rent was $ xxx a month and he paid me a total of $ yyy. The address of the apartment was insert-rental-address. Thank you, put sticky indicating he needs to sign here print his name underneath. PS, you are going to learn the hard way that you were to get and keep these rent receipts for 6 YEARS after you filed. If you cannot satisfy the CRA, you will have to pay back any tax refund you received based on the rent claimed.

It's very simple; if you cannot show them a receipt, you will have to pay back the portion o f your refund that claiming your rent got you in the first place, plus arrears interest. You must have a receipt for every claim. The gov't won't make exceptions.
