Is it true some people don't need deodorant (due to genetics)?

Question by NearlyDecember: Is it true some people don't need deodorant (due to genetics)? My school welcomes several exchange students every year and the other day, after gym, I noticed that after running about seven laps around the field none of the exchange students were sweating as much as everyone else, and when I asked about deodorant they laughed. The conversation turned to shaving legs and they looked like I was crazy. (I already knew they never got leg hair, so I wasn't surprised by that.) I went to the Health Ed teacher and she went on and on about, "Every person who reach puberty MUST HAVE deodorant!!!" but to be honest she seems like the kind of person who don't travel out of the states much (maybe never) and thus have little world experience... So is it ture some people don't need deodorant thanks to their genetics? Sorry, is it *true... “people not in constant high-stress situations could get away with wearing a lot less than they do “ 7 dermatologists echoed. . . “psychological fear of odor. “ vast majority of Europeans and Africans have the GG or GA genotypes, “a strong axillary odor.” East Asians don’t. http://www.lab-times.org/editorial/e_124.html http://tinychoices.com/2007/11/14/do-we-really-need-deodorant/ Best answer:

No, no one is genetic predisposed to not have body odor, if you have sweat glads then you will smell if left long enough or if you work out hard enough. Some cultures don't really mind the whole BO thing, so yes its possible to find some people who don't use it for social reasons (just like some cultures don't shave).

It is true. My mom has never used deodorant in her life. I've also never seen her pit. I also heard that diet plays a large part in whether your sweat stinks or not. People that do not eat meat or animal by-products typically have a non-smelly armpit.

I think they're just messing with you. A lot of people don't sweat because they are either in really good shape of stay really hydrated by always drinking a lot of water, even when your not thirsty, and eating really good hydrating fruits. I hardly ever sweat. But your heath teacher is right, everyone needs deodorant, it's called hygiene.

Yes it's true that you don't *need* deodorant. A healthy diet (with lots of vegies) will cleanse your body so that when you sweat, there will be no bad odor, so it's not necessarily genetics. Sweat itself is a natural function of the human body intended for ridding the body of unwanted toxins. Using deodorant suppresses this as most people do have an odor when they sweat because their diets aren't the best.
