Travel hacking: buying coins for miles?

Image by airtran u route map Austin Yoder Question by Sam: Travel hacking: buying coins for miles? I've been reading a lot about "travel hacking" - that is, finding alternative ways to earn miles that don't include actually setting foot on a plane. One of the more popular ways to do this is to take advantage of when airlines send out credit cards offering XX,XXX miles if you spend $ YYY in Z months. The general idea is to spend $ YYY on coins from the US mint. You pay for what you get (literally) and there's no tax or a delivery charge. The miles are then posted to your account and you can cancel the credit card. My questions is this - Does this affect your credit score? I feel like opening and canceling credit cards like this could bring your credit score down. I'm interested in trying this out because my fiancée and I want to travel, but not at the expense of a great credit rating. Best answer:

This is actually something that the credit card industry is cracking down on quickly. After understanding how many people have abused the system in that manner to gain miles for sale or travel, most card issuers don't give points or miles for purchases of currency. Before you open a card to do so you should look into whether or not you'll even get the miles you're hoping for.
